In 3rd of January to 20th of January 2001, Democrats held a majority via the deciding vote of Democratic Vice President Al Gore. Then on January 20, 2001, Republican Vice President Richard Cheney held the deciding vote, giving the majority to the Republicans. On May 24, 2001, Republican Senator for Vermont switched from Republican to Independent, for June 6, 2001. he said he would caucus with Democrats, giving them a 1 seat lead. A Democratic Senator died on October 25, 2002, then a Independent was appointed for his role.
