Kingston, Ontario is a Canadian city located at the eastern end of Lake Ontario, where the lake runs into the St. Lawrence River and the Thousand Islands begin.

Kingston is the site of two universities, Queen's University and the Royal Military College of Canada, and a major community college, St. Lawrence College.

The central part of the city is located between the Cataraqui River to the east and the Little Cataraqui Creek to the West, with outlying areas extending in both directions. Kingston has a rich and beautiful waterfront. Major features have included Flora MacDonald Confederation Basin, Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, Collins Bay, Wolfe Island, Garden Island, the Cataraqui River (including the Inner Harbour and, within that, Anglin Bay).

Notable annual waterfront events have included the CORK sailing regatta, the Kingston Dragon Boat Festival, and the Thousand Islands Poker Run. Because of its proximity to Lake Ontario, Kingston typically enjoys less extreme temperatures than areas inland.

Cathcart Tower is a Martello tower located on Cedar Island just off the shore from historic Fort Henry in Kingston, Ontario Canada. It is one of four such towers built in the 1840s to protect Kingston's harbour and the entrance to the Rideau Canal. Built in 1848, this limestone tower is 11 m high and 16,5 m in diameter. It is surrounded by a shallow ditch and by a glacis extending to the shorelines on three sides. The guns of Cathcart Tower covered the eastern approaches of Kingston Harbour.

Kingston is nicknamed the "Limestone City" because of the many historic buildings built from the local limestone. Kingston is the county seat of Frontenac County.

The Kingston Royal Naval Dockyard was a Royal Navy yard from 1788 to 1853 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, at the site of the current Royal Military College of Canada. Located next to Point Frederick (Old Fort Henry) on Lake Ontario, it was the only Royal Navy base on Lake Ontario, countering the American naval base a short distance away in Sackets Harbour, New York during the War of 1812. After the Rush-Bagot Treaty of 1817, the role of the dockyard diminished, and it closed in 1853.

The Kingston area is well known for its fine golf courses and for the many strong players it has produced. The Kingston Golf Club, established in 1884, was a founding member of the Royal Canadian Golf Association in 1895.

Fort Frontenac was a French trading post and military fort built in 1673 in what is now Kingston, Ontario, Canada. It was strategically positioned at the mouth of the Cataraqui River where the St. Lawrence River leaves Lake Ontario in a location traditionally known as Cataraqui. The original fort, a crude, wooden palisade structure, was called Fort Cataraqui but was later named for Louis de Buade de Frontenac, Governor of New France (Count Frontenac), who was responsible for building the fort. The fort, however, was still often referred to as Fort Cataraqui.
