This is a history of Jamaica, good for seeing if you are about to go on holiday to Jamaica, or if you are going to travel there,
Jamaica, is a land of 2.5 million people, it sits under Cuba, and is smaller than it.
It was inhabitted, by teh Native tribes from maybe 10,000 BC, or ealier, when it is felt Giant Sloths on teh isle, were made exticnt. Locals included in later years teh Arrawak, tribes who farmed, and knew of other isles.
In 1492 Columbus came, and saw his Spanish kingdom enslave and kill off the locals.
Locals called the isle, after it's many springs. inhabbiited by Carribs, It had 500 black slaves in 1660, a idea from other new British colonies, Barbados saw Black slaves in the 1620s, Look at http://www.info-facts.com/
In teh 1640s-50s the British as Spain declined took the isle, and landed more and more slaves from Ireland and Africa.
These communities with British settlers, some forced, as prisoners, of the wars of 1640s Britain, caused by the king's tyrannical rule. became teh main populations, till black populations grew, outgrowing, them via importing of slaves.
In the 1780s 20,000 died of famine dueing the American war of independamce, a war where Americans were pushed to revolt, as of the bad choices of teh British king.
There were a few slave revolts especially in teh era, of teh French Revolution, inspired by Haiti's ending of the slavery via French republicans, and local revolutionaries actions. But during it the British then evicted 600 Maroons, who lived ibn teh interior hunting wild dogs, too other arweas, killing some again.
Maroons were escaped slaves who lived in the Centre of Jamaiac, and had some left to themselves ways even after slavery ended. They had won these rights as of deadly fights against the colonial regime, and helping slave revolts every so often.
There were brutal slave revolst in teh 19thC, but eventual;ly slavery ended. There were 0.31million slaves when that system, ended in the 1830s, the majority of the people. Only 2 years before this, 500 slaves were killed in revolt and hanged trying to end slavery,, I belive 100s died in other Jamiacan slave revolts to then.
Another Jamaican revolt though occurred in 1865, as rich normally white landowners were enxcroaching among susistence black ex-slaves land, 22 died in this revolt, and 439 were executed. Whites, and some rich blacks got their 17thC delegate assembly back.,
Jamaiocans renmained a society of rich whites, sligghtly less rich half whites, half blacvks, and poor blacks.
In teh 1930s, there were big strikes, which helped with riots create a kind of socialist movement, from unions in 1938, which got some elected power in the 1944, under Manleys' Pnp. in decolonialism. and his pressure.
In the 19thCentury I must add, while slavery weas being abolished some thousands on Idinam,s were brought or invited over as indentured servants, living as serfsm, till reforms, in the late 19thC, and early 20thC, caused by British fears, of Indian, independence groups, and Liberals, getting more power of Conservatives in Britain. this freed 10s of thousands of semi- serfs. though some were allready free.
The plan was for a West Indian Federation, but the more right wing Labour Party of Jamaica, opposed this, wanting Jamaiacan independence . The L;abour party won a referenda, withdrawing, and won teh election.
It was officially independanmt from 1962. after teh WIF founded in 1958.
Balck people, were still in situations, where horrible people did not srve them in hotels, and such. in many cases, maybe that continues today I do not know, it was very unewqal.
In the 1970s, Manley installed as he was elected very left wing policies, even seeming to be pally with Castro.
The regime was ousted partly with the help of teh CIA, helping Labour gangs in party political gang warfare, of 100s dead,
The pulled back some left wing policies, and got US aid again.
The PNP took over leading acroos the 90s to now. but less radically than under Manley,.
Some PNP, members propose stopping unfair treatment of sexual minorities, and also the creation of a republic. and teh reduction upon of violent gangs.
It is most famous for Bob Marley the internationally reknowen reggae star.
